Best Hotels In Canada 2012: British Columbian Hotels Take Top Honours.
December 28, 2012
When it comes to the best of Canadian hotels, the West Coast has more than its fair share.
A look back at Canada's best hotels of 2012 shows that some of the top ranking spots to spend the night are located in British Columbia, with stand-outs including the Pan Pacific Village Centre in Whistler, B.C., as well as Vancouver's Four Seasons Hotel and Pinnacle at the Pier. The three hotels took top honours in travel publications like Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler, as well as earning rave reviews from users on travel booking sites like Expedia.ca and TripAdvisor.
According to each survey's findings, Vancouver hotels earned high praise from users for features like fine dining at restaurants like Yew at the Four Seasons Hotel; the friendliness of staff at the Fairmont Pacific Rim and the ocean view found at the Pinnacle. The number of top hotels may have something to do with the province's focus on tourism, an industry that made gains in December, drawing in more visitors from China, New Zealand and Brazil, according to provincial numbers.
While each publication's selection methods varied, all contending hotels were judged based on reader and user's opinions. For example, Travel + Leisure had readers rate Canadian hotels on a scale of one to five in categories that included room/facilities, location, service, restaurant/food and value. Conde Nast Traveler had a similar approach with an online survey that garnered over 46,000 responses. Expedia, on the other hand, ranked hotels around the globe based on guest reviews, overall value and insider input from industry professionals. Those deemed worthy were selected for the Expedia Insiders' Select list.
Other lists, like TripAdvisor's Traveler's Choice 2012 awards for best Canadian hotels, were less scientific in their methods and instead looked at hotels that had the largest number of positive reviews. That being said, an increasing number of hotels (and other tourist hotspots) are taking TripAdvisor's influence more seriously, and publish the site's reviews on their hotels' own sites — regardless of how negative TripAdvisor users may be, reports USA Today.
For would-be travellers looking for a more condensed version of everyone's top picks for hotels, HuffPost Canada Travel has gone through each of these surveys and selected all the contenders that earned two or more accolades, along any other notable picks.
